SIGITE…increasing women majors

I attended SIGITE (Information Technology Education) in New York last week.  Lack of women in IT majors was a major concern of just about every person at the conference.  I met a faculty member from Nigeria, who has 50% women majors in her computing courses, undergraduate and graduate.

In the United States, both men and women incorrectly believe that men are better at computing.  Also, women have less confidence then men going into computing.  In fact, a male non-computing major taking programming has more confidence than a women who is a computing major.     (Beyer, Gender Differences in CS Students, 2003)
